Before she ever stepped into a courtroom, Spogmay Khaliq knew she wanted to become an attorney

As a little girl, Spogmay remembers telling her father, “When I grow up, I want to be an attorney.”

College
A different path
But as she got older, medical school became the plan. Spogmay entered college as a biology major and started down the path toward medicine. As she progressed through her science courses, she realized medicine was not the right path for her.
Starting over
Listening to that voice
Every time registration came around, she could hear that little girl in the back of her mind. Eventually, Spogmay decided to listen to that voice. She changed her major to accounting, started a new path, and earned her degree.

Inside the legal world
She began her professional career working as an accountant at a personal injury law firm—surrounded every day by attorneys, clients, cases, and the work of a law firm. She later worked at a CPA firm, but her interest in law never faded.
The day
One day
Two futures
Spogmay interviewed with MD Anderson Cancer Center and was offered two positions. Then her phone rang. Thurgood Marshall School of Law was calling. That same day, she received her acceptance letter—but she had only 24 hours to make a decision.

Spogmay chose law
Attorney Khaliq attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law, becoming a first-generation attorney. Through the school’s legal clinic, she worked with clients facing a range of immigration issues. Her experiences in criminal court also strengthened her passion for criminal defense and courtroom advocacy.
Personal injury
Understanding the entire case
She began as a law clerk at one of the largest personal injury law firms in Texas and, after becoming an attorney, continued working there as a personal injury lawyer. She later joined a mid-sized personal injury firm to gain broader, hands-on experience with every stage of a claim.

As a public defender, she represented hundreds of clients with different lives, different circumstances, and different stories. She learned to challenge evidence, question assumptions, find weaknesses, and keep pushing when the first answer was no.
